I am fascinated how light, when shown through paper, sets a tone for a space.
I work with two forms of wood, the rigid form filled with the beauty of grain and color. The other is the flexible form, translucent paper, often containing bits of its origin, filtering the light and imparting its own tone and feeling.
I had been a wood worker for many years and one day I needed a lamp for a dim space, so I built one. That one lamp started the madness that continues today. Originally, I took a lot of inspiration from the Japanese lantern style and began to experiment with design features. Some features such as the lamp legs became funky feet, the lamp frames varied in wood species, color and joinery.
Of course, the paper is central to the lamp and its tone. I have used many different types of paper with bark or flowers or leaves embedded in the pulp to bring my projects life.
